John David Washington is a returning American actor and professional football player. He was born on born July 28, 1984, in Los Angeles, California, the U.S. Playing college football at Morehouse College, he signed in 2006 as an undrafted free agent with the St. Louis Rams. Worked professionally, Washington spent four years running back for the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the United Football League. Washington went on to an acting career like his father, Denzel Washington, and Washington’s girlfriend, Pauletta. He was part of the HBO Comedy series Ballers’ main cast (2015–2019).
He also appeared as Ron Stallworth in Spike Lee’s crime film BlacKkKlansman (2018), for which he received nominations for both the Golden Globe and the Screen Actors Guild Award, and starred in the spy film Tenet (2020) by Christopher Nolan.
Family & Childhood
Washington was raised in Los Angeles, California’s Toluca Lake neighborhood, the son of actor Denzel Washington and actress and singer Pauletta Washington (née Pearson).
He is the eldest of their four children. At the age of seven, he appeared in Spike Lee‘s 1992 feature film Malcolm X as a pupil in a Harlem school, which featured his father Denzel in the title role. Washington attended Los Angeles Campbell Hall School where he was a letterman in football, basketball, and track. In 2002, he graduated from high school and 2006, from Morehouse College.
Career In Football
As a senior at Morehouse College, Washington led the conference with 1,198 yards (a school record) in rushing. He also had an average of 5.6 yards, nine touchdowns, and 10 69 yard catches. Washington holds the single game (242 yards) and career (3,699 yards) of the school in its college career rushing history. Washington was selected in 2009 by the United Football League’s California Redwoods (later the Sacramento Mountain Lions), in the UFL Premiere Season Draft. He signed with the team on August 18. After transferring to Sacramento, Washington remained with the team playing for the Mountain Lions until 2012 when the league unexpectedly folded in that October.
Career In Acting
In the role of Ricky Jerret in the HBO drama series Ballers, Washington returned to acting in 2015. Critics received the series well and carried through 2019 for five seasons. Washington was cast in September 2017 as detective Ron Stallworth’s lead role in Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman thriller, which was based on Stallworth’s memoir.
The film participated at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival for the Palme d’Or where it premiered on 14 May 2018. It hasn’t won the Palme d’Or yet the festival jury has awarded the Grand Prix. The film launched a US theater release on August 10, 2018, a date chosen to coincide with the Charlottesville rally’s one year anniversary. The film was a critical success, winning nominations from Washington for both the Golden Globe and the Screen Actors Guild Award.
Washington also appeared in the movies Monsters and Men and All Rise in 2018, both of which were screened in the USA. Section Dramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival 2018. He also appeared in The Old Man & the Gun, released by Fox Searchlight Pictures on 28 September 2018.
He was recently seen in the movie Tenet. This movie is directed by Christopher Nolan.
