When officers arrived on the scene, the woman, identified as Farrauto, “informed police that she had ‘strangled’ her 4-year son and he was in the apartment,” according to the police press release.

Police went to her apartment right away and discovered an “unconscious and unresponsive young male child,” according to the report. The boy was rushed to the hospital but died shortly after arriving.

New London Police Chief Peter Reichard said Farrauto ordered responding officers, “take me now,” during a press conference on Sunday. The 33-year-old mother “indicated that she hurt her son and that her son was in the apartment” when they asked her what she said, Reichard said.

As he explained the situation, the police chief grew distressed, saying the boy seemed to be in medical distress when officers discovered him, without a pulse. The boy was taken to L+M Hospital by the New London Fire Department, according to him, but the medical staff was unable to revive him. Reichard elaborated:

  • I talked to the officers first arrived at the scene. They were choked up by it, all of them there have children. A couple of them have children the same age, and it hits home, it hits you right in the guts. I then proceeded to the emergency room myself where several more of my officers and the entire emergency room staff were there. It hits home with them too and they do these things every day. It’s not easy.

The child will not be publicly identified at this time, according to Reichard, because they have not yet reached out to his father or paternal relatives.

Farrauto was charged with two counts of criminal mischief at first, but after a police investigation, she was charged with murder and endangering the welfare of a minor. A $1 million bond has been set for her.

GoFundMe Campaign

Friends and family who contributed to a GoFundMe to help pay for his funeral expenses described him as a “sweet baby boy.” “David was an innocent 4-year-old boy who was loved by so many people,” Farrauto’s friend Rachel Mercer-Consoli told The Day newspaper. “What happened to him was not his fault.”
